Documentary Review: Beautiful Noise

Beautiful Noise is a documentary released in 2014 about the emergence of shoegaze and dreampop, presenting the story of pivotal and indispensable bands that were pioneers in developing the genre as we know today, such as Cocteau Twins, The Jesus and Mary Chain, and Ride

Along with the documentary, members of these bands also give their testimony, and interview about the beginning of the band and how it came to be, Robin Guthrie, Andy Bell, and others, as well as members of other renowned bands such as Robert Smith from The Cure, and Billy Corgan from The Smashing Pumpkins

At first, it is very interesting to see the influence that these bands had in distinct other bands and musicians of other subgenres of rock later, and some people may still call these dreampop underground, but still are the type of band to have a deep influence on other genres and artists.

Also in the documentary, you can find interviews of founders and owners of heavily influential records labels not only to alternative rock itself as well as to shoegaze and dreampop, such as Ivo Watts from 4AD, and Alan McGee from Creation Records

Although the documentary presents interesting and new point of views when it comes to the emergence of the genre/movement, the most influential bands in it, and the people that were influenced by it, the documentary received mix reviews by critics and viewers, since some found it not deep enough on the bands, style and genre.

The documentary keeps coming back to the same interviews, the same people, not giving it a sense of continuity, and only reserved 5/10 to talk about each band, which some found very little time to talk about such story rich bands.

The documentary is said to have taken 10 years to screen and get done, which also dulled people’s high expectations for it.

It is a good documentary for fans of the genre and of the bands in general, but it really could have gone a little further on the history if this music.
