Documentary in the Theaters: Paul McCartney and the Wings

It is common knowledge nowadays, that after The Beatles recorded their last full-length album in 1969 (Abbey Road), each member of the band started their respective solo career almost immediately after the band split up.

And Paul McCartney had a notorious critical and commercial success with his solo albums then in later projects when the bassist and singer of the previous band teamed up with his then wife Linda McCartney and other musicians to form The Wings, releasing critically and commercially acclaimed albums such as Band on the Run (1973), Red Rose Speedway (1973), and Wings at the Speed of Sound (1976).

And now, a documentary filmed at the time of the making of one Wing’s most long await albums, is receiving a full-feature release in movie theaters this year.

One Hand Clapping is a live-in-studio recorded by the band in August 1974, only to be released in June 2024, nearly 50 years after its recording.

The album contains well known hits by the band such as Jet, My Love, and Maybe I’m Amazed.

The album began as a rockumentary starring Paul McCartney and his then-band, Wings, and directed by David Litchfield. It was recorded over four days in August 1974 at Abbey Road Studios in London. The film features the band performing live in the studio and recording a potential live album, as well as voice-over interviews with the band members.

And now, officially 50 years after its recording, the documentary is scheduled to have a release in movie theaters in September 26 this year.

Originally shot on 1970s videotape, the footage has been scanned and restored in 4K. The dialogue has been de-mixed using Wingnut’s MAL software and the film features a new Dolby Atmos audio mix by Steve Orchard and Giles Martin.

Stay tuned for the documentary’s release, for it has been scheduled to have a limited exhibition in theaters and be sure to check the live album which has already been released.
